biogenesis
Life from life
Biogenesis is the principle that living organisms arise only from other living organisms, not from nonliving matter.
The term emerged in contrast to spontaneous generation—the discredited belief that life could spring from mud, meat, or other inanimate substances.
Pasteur's experiments confirmed biogenesis.
In cell biology, biogenesis also refers to the production of cellular structures: mitochondrial biogenesis, ribosome biogenesis.
