sporulation

Making dormant cells

Sporulation is the process by which an organism produces spores—typically as a survival mechanism or mode of reproduction.

Bacteria sporulate when conditions become hostile, forming dormant endospores that can withstand extreme heat, desiccation, and chemicals.

Fungi sporulate as part of their normal reproductive cycle: The mold reached sporulation and released millions of spores into the air.
