belaying

Climber's safety technique

Belaying is securing a rope around a fixed point to control tension or arrest a fall.

In climbing, a belayer manages the rope for a climber, ready to catch them if they slip: She was belaying from the ground while her partner ascended.

In nautical use, to belay is to secure a line around a cleat or pin.

Belay that is sailor's slang for "stop" or "disregard what I just said."
