yodeling

Swiss vocal tradition

Yodeling is a style of singing that rapidly alternates between the normal voice and a high falsetto, producing a distinctive warbling sound.

The technique originated in the Alps, where it served as a way for herders to communicate across mountain valleys.

It appears in Swiss and Austrian folk music, American country and western songs, and occasionally pop music: She learned to yodel from her grandmother.
