top-rope
Climbing safety cord
Top-rope refers to a style of rock climbing where the rope runs from the climber up through an anchor at the top of the route and back down to a belayer below.
This setup catches falls immediately, making it the safest form of roped climbing: We top-roped a few easy routes to warm up.
As a verb, to top-rope a climb is to ascend it this way.
Contrast with lead climbing, where the climber clips into protection points while ascending.
