multipitch

Consecutive roped sections

Multipitch describes a rock climb too long to complete in a single rope length, requiring climbers to stop at intermediate anchors called belays and climb in successive stages.

Each section between anchors is a pitch.

Multipitch routes demand more gear, planning, and endurance than single-pitch climbs.

We spent six hours on the multipitch route up El Capitan.

The term also appears as two words or hyphenated.
