battle cruiser
Fast armored warship
A battle cruiser is a large warship combining the heavy guns of a battleship with the speed and lighter armor of a cruiser.
Developed in the early twentieth century, battle cruisers were designed to outgun anything they couldn't outrun.
The type proved vulnerable in combat—their thin armor couldn't withstand hits from battleship-caliber weapons—and fell out of favor after World War I.
The battle cruiser HMS Hood was sunk by the Bismarck in 1941.
