BTU

Furnace output unit

BTU stands for British thermal unit, a measure of heat energy.

One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

The unit appears most often in specifications for heating and cooling equipment: a 12,000-BTU air conditioner, a furnace rated at 80,000 BTUs.

Despite the name, BTUs are more common in American than British usage.
