auger in
Drill into ground
To auger in is to crash nose-first into the ground, like a drill boring into earth.
The term comes from aviation, describing an aircraft that spirals downward and impacts vertically: The engine failed and the plane augered in.
By extension, it can mean to fail spectacularly or meet a disastrous end: The startup augered in after burning through its funding.
