core drill
Hollow boring tool
A core drill is a cylindrical cutting tool that removes a plug of material rather than grinding it all to dust.
Used on concrete, masonry, rock, and other hard substances, it leaves a clean round hole: They used a core drill to run pipes through the foundation.
The extracted cylinder, called a core sample, is sometimes the point—geologists core drill to study underground layers.
