backfill
Fill excavated hole
Backfill is material used to refill an excavated hole or trench, or the act of refilling it: They backfilled the foundation with gravel.
In business contexts, to backfill a position is to hire someone to replace a departed employee: We need to backfill the marketing director role.
The term extends to retroactively adding data or completing work that should have been done earlier.
