anaerobic respiration
Breathing without oxygen
Anaerobic respiration is cellular energy production that occurs without oxygen.
Unlike aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen to break down glucose fully, anaerobic respiration uses alternative chemical pathways that yield less energy but allow organisms to survive in oxygen-poor environments.
In humans, anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid during intense exercise when oxygen supply can't keep up with demand: The sprinter's muscles burned from anaerobic respiration.
In microorganisms like yeast, anaerobic respiration produces alcohol and carbon dioxide—the basis of fermentation in brewing and baking.
