pulmonary edema

Fluid-filled air sacs

Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, typically in the air sacs where oxygen exchange occurs.

The condition impairs breathing and can be life-threatening.

Most cases result from heart failure—when the heart can't pump blood efficiently, pressure builds and fluid leaks into lung tissue.

Other causes include severe infections, high altitude, and kidney failure.
