hyperventilation
Dangerously rapid breathing
Hyperventilation is abnormally rapid or deep breathing that expels carbon dioxide from the blood faster than the body produces it.
This can cause dizziness, tingling in the extremities, and lightheadedness.
It often occurs during panic attacks or moments of intense anxiety, though it can also result from physical conditions.
The doctor talked her through her hyperventilation until her breathing slowed.
Someone who hyperventilates may be told to breathe into a paper bag to restore normal carbon dioxide levels.
