hypoxemia

Oxygen-starved blood

Hypoxemia is abnormally low oxygen levels in the blood, a medical condition distinct from hypoxia (low oxygen in tissues generally).

It typically results from lung disease, heart problems, or high altitude.

Doctors measure it through arterial blood gases or pulse oximetry: The patient's hypoxemia worsened overnight.

Severe hypoxemia requires supplemental oxygen.
