respiratory failure

Lungs stop working

Respiratory failure is a condition in which the lungs cannot adequately exchange gases—either failing to take in enough oxygen or failing to expel enough carbon dioxide, or both.

It can be acute, developing suddenly from trauma or illness, or chronic, progressing over years in conditions like emphysema.

The patient was placed on a ventilator after going into respiratory failure.
