Vinaya

Buddhist monks' rules

Vinaya is the code of monastic discipline in Buddhism, one of the three "baskets" of Buddhist scripture alongside teachings (sutras) and philosophical analysis (abhidharma).

It governs the daily conduct of monks and nuns—rules about robes, meals, celibacy, and community life.

Different Buddhist traditions follow slightly different versions of the Vinaya: Theravada monks adhere strictly to the ancient Vinaya rules.
