almshouse

Home for indigents

An almshouse is a charitable residence providing housing for the poor, elderly, or infirm.

Historically funded by religious institutions, guilds, or wealthy benefactors, almshouses offered shelter to those who couldn't support themselves: The old almshouse on Church Street has been converted to apartments.

The term is now largely historical, replaced by concepts like public housing or assisted living.
