friar
Cowled religious brother
A friar is a member of certain Roman Catholic religious orders—Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites, and Augustinians.
Unlike monks, who live in monasteries, friars move through the world, preaching and serving communities while taking vows of poverty.
The word shares roots with fraternal, reflecting the brotherhood of these orders: Friar Tuck, a wandering friar.
