Sixties war zone
Nam is an informal shortening of Vietnam, especially in reference to the Vietnam War and the American military experience there: He did two tours in Nam, a lot of guys came back from Nam messed up.
The clipped form carries the weight of that conflict—its trauma, its veterans, its cultural aftermath.
Outside war contexts, Nam rarely appears.
