safe zone
Secure designated space
A safe zone is an area designated as protected from danger, conflict, or harm.
In military or humanitarian contexts, it describes territory where civilians are shielded from combat: The UN established a safe zone for refugees.
The term extends to spaces—physical or metaphorical—where people feel secure from criticism, judgment, or uncomfortable ideas: The support group was a safe zone where members could share freely.
Critics sometimes use the phrase dismissively to suggest overprotection from challenging viewpoints.
