Maronites
Eastern Catholic community
Maronites are members of an Eastern Catholic church centered in Lebanon, in full communion with Rome while maintaining their own liturgy and traditions.
The Maronite Church traces its origins to a fourth-century Syrian monk, Saint Maron.
Maronites have historically been concentrated in the mountains of Lebanon, where they played a central role in the country's founding and politics: The Lebanese president is traditionally a Maronite Christian.
