Beirut
Lebanon's main city
Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon, situated on the Mediterranean coast.
Long a cultural and commercial center of the Arab world, Beirut became synonymous with urban warfare during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), when sectarian fighting devastated much of the city.
The name sometimes evokes scenes of destruction: The neighborhood looked like Beirut after the riots.
