Protestants
Non-Catholic Western Christians
Protestants are Christians belonging to churches that broke from Roman Catholicism during the sixteenth-century Reformation or developed from those churches afterward.
The term covers a wide range of denominations—Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, and many others—united mainly by rejection of papal authority and emphasis on scripture and individual faith.
The town was divided between Catholics and Protestants.
