Protestant
Non-Catholic Western Christian
Protestant describes Christians and churches that separated from Roman Catholicism during the Reformation, or their descendants.
The term covers a vast range of denominations—Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Pentecostal, and many others.
Protestants generally emphasize scripture over church tradition and reject papal authority.
In some contexts, particularly Northern Ireland, Protestant carries political and cultural weight beyond religious affiliation. (Lowercase protestant means one who protests.)
