Chaldeans

Mesopotamian priestly caste

Chaldeans were an ancient Semitic people who settled in southern Mesopotamia and eventually dominated Babylon.

The Neo-Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar II is sometimes called the Chaldean Empire.

In biblical contexts, Chaldeans often means Babylonians generally.

The term also designated astrologers and soothsayers, since Babylonian priests were renowned for celestial observation: The Chaldeans interpreted the king's dreams.

Today, Chaldeans refers to an ethnic group of Iraqi Christians, particularly those belonging to the Chaldean Catholic Church.
