chain migration
Family-based visa process
Chain migration is the process by which immigrants sponsor family members to join them, who then sponsor others, creating a sequence of related arrivals.
The term is neutral in immigration policy discussions but often appears in arguments against family-based visa policies: Critics say chain migration allows one immigrant to eventually bring dozens of relatives.
Also called family reunification or family-based immigration.
