Manzanar

California detention center

Manzanar was one of ten internment camps where the United States confined Japanese Americans during World War II, located in California's Owens Valley.

Over 10,000 people were held there from 1942 to 1945.

The name, Spanish for "apple orchard," now refers to the National Historic Site preserving the camp's remains: We visited Manzanar to understand what our grandparents endured.
