restitution
Paying someone back
Restitution is the act of restoring something to its rightful owner or original state, or compensating for loss or damage.
Courts order restitution when criminals must repay victims: The judge ordered restitution of $50,000 to the fraud victims.
In law, restitution prevents unjust enrichment—if someone gains at another's expense, they must give it back.
The word carries a sense of making whole what was broken or taken.
