home front
Domestic war support
Home front refers to civilian life and activities in a country at war, as distinguished from the military front where combat occurs.
The term emerged during World War I when total war required mobilizing entire populations—rationing, factory work, civil defense.
Women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers on the home front.
The phrase now applies to any domestic sphere contrasted with distant action: He focused on the home front while his partner traveled for work.
