family separation

Relatives forced apart

Family separation is the forcible removal of children from their parents, especially by government authorities.

The term gained prominence in the late 2010s for U.S. immigration policy that separated migrant children from parents at the border: Thousands of children were affected by family separation.

More broadly, it describes any policy or circumstance that breaks apart family units—through incarceration, child welfare intervention, or deportation.
