Civil Rights Act

Landmark antidiscrimination law

The Civil Rights Act refers to several landmark U.S. federal laws prohibiting discrimination, most notably the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

That act outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in employment, public accommodations, and federally funded programs.

The Civil Rights Act transformed American society.

Earlier acts (1866, 1875) addressed post-slavery rights; later ones (1968, 1991) expanded protections.
