military necessity
Combat operational imperative
Military necessity is a legal doctrine in warfare permitting actions required to achieve legitimate military objectives, even when those actions would otherwise be prohibited.
It justifies destruction of property, civilian casualties, or deviation from normal rules when genuinely needed for military success.
The principle is meant to limit war's excesses, not excuse them—commanders cannot invoke military necessity to justify atrocities or disproportionate harm: The bombing was defended on grounds of military necessity.
