King George V

Elizabeth's paternal grandfather

King George V was the British monarch from 1910 to 1936, reigning through World War I and the early Great Depression.

He was the first ruler of the House of Windsor, having changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha during the war due to anti-German sentiment.

His reign saw the rise of the British Commonwealth and the decline of European monarchies.
