Edward VIII

Britain's briefest king

Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom for less than a year in 1936 before abdicating to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée.

The constitutional crisis over his determination to marry a woman the government deemed unsuitable made abdication the only path forward.

He spent the rest of his life as the Duke of Windsor, largely in exile.
