King Edward VIII was the British monarch who famously abdicated the throne in 1936 after less than a year as king, choosing to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée.
The constitutional crisis made "Edward VIII" shorthand for choosing love over duty: He pulled an Edward VIII and left the family business for her.
He subsequently held the title Duke of Windsor.
