general strike
Nationwide labor stoppage
A general strike is a coordinated work stoppage across multiple industries or an entire workforce, intended to pressure governments or employers through economic disruption.
Unlike strikes targeting a single company, general strikes aim for maximum impact: The general strike paralyzed the country's transportation and manufacturing sectors.
They often carry political rather than purely labor demands.
