Indira Gandhi
Subcontinent's first premier
Indira Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India, serving from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.
Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, she dominated Indian politics for nearly two decades.
Her tenure included the 1971 Bangladesh war, the controversial 1975–1977 Emergency period suspending civil liberties, and conflicts with Sikh separatists that led to her assassination by her own bodyguards.
