The territory has been disputed since 1947, with ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan over its control.
Kashmir also refers to cashmere—the fine wool from goats native to the region: a Kashmir shawl.
The Led Zeppelin song "Kashmir" evokes vastness and exoticism. (Lowercase cashmere is the wool or fabric.)
