forced sterilization
Imposed reproductive termination
Forced sterilization is the surgical removal or destruction of reproductive organs without a person's meaningful consent.
Governments have imposed it on populations deemed "undesirable"—the disabled, mentally ill, poor, or ethnic minorities—often under eugenics programs.
Thousands of Indigenous women underwent forced sterilization in the 1970s.
The practice constitutes a human rights violation and, when systematic, a form of genocide.
