Gulf Stream

Warm ocean river

The Gulf Stream is a powerful warm ocean current that flows from the Gulf of Mexico along the eastern coast of North America before crossing the Atlantic toward Europe.

It significantly moderates the climate of Western Europe, keeping temperatures milder than other regions at similar latitudes.

The term sometimes appears figuratively for any strong, directional flow: a gulf stream of immigrants heading north.
