Sargasso Sea

Seaweed-choked Atlantic

The Sargasso Sea is a region of the North Atlantic Ocean bounded not by coastlines but by ocean currents, distinguished by its calm waters and floating mats of sargassum seaweed.

It lies roughly between the Azores and the Caribbean.

The term sometimes appears figuratively for any place of stagnation or entrapment: His career had drifted into a Sargasso Sea of bureaucracy.
