Cape Hatteras
Atlantic's dangerous elbow
Cape Hatteras is a narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina's Outer Banks, notorious for treacherous waters where cold and warm currents collide.
The area has claimed so many ships that it's called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Its lighthouse, with distinctive black-and-white spiral stripes, is among the tallest in North America.
