Checkpoint Charlie
Cold War gateway
Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War, located on Friedrichstraße.
It became a symbol of the Iron Curtain divide and the tension between communist and Western powers.
The name followed NATO's phonetic alphabet—Alpha and Bravo were other checkpoints.
The site is now a tourist attraction and museum: We visited Checkpoint Charlie to see where American and Soviet tanks once faced off.
