Tiananmen Square

Forbidden City frontage

Tiananmen Square is a vast public plaza in central Beijing, one of the largest city squares in the world.

It has been the site of major political events and protests, most notably the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations that ended when the Chinese military killed hundreds or possibly thousands of civilians.

References to Tiananmen or June Fourth often invoke this massacre and its suppression in Chinese public discourse.
