Egyptology

Ancient Nile studies

Egyptology is the academic study of ancient Egypt—its language, history, literature, religion, art, and architecture.

The field emerged in the nineteenth century following Napoleon's Egyptian campaign and the decipherment of hieroglyphics.

An Egyptologist might excavate tombs, translate papyri, or analyze mummies: She's pursuing a doctorate in Egyptology.
