African history
Saharan civilizations' chronicle
African history encompasses the past of the African continent and its peoples, from prehistoric human origins through ancient civilizations like Egypt, Kush, and Axum, to precolonial kingdoms, the transatlantic slave trade, European colonization, independence movements, and contemporary nations.
The field challenges Eurocentric narratives that once dismissed Africa as having no history worth studying: African history courses now cover the Mali Empire's wealth and Great Zimbabwe's architecture.
The term may also refer to the academic discipline devoted to this subject.
