mummies

Bandaged museum exhibits

Mummies is the plural of mummy, which has two distinct meanings.

A mummy is a preserved corpse, either through ancient embalming practices like those of Egypt or through natural desiccation.

The word also serves as British English for mother, equivalent to American "mommy": The mummies picked up their children from school.

Context usually makes clear which sense is intended.
