comitatus

Lord's warrior band

Comitatus is a Latin term for a band of warriors bound by loyalty to a leader, who in turn provides for and protects them.

The concept appears in discussions of early Germanic and Anglo-Saxon society, where such bonds formed the basis of military and political organization.

In U.S. law, *posse comitatus* refers to the power of a sheriff to conscript citizens to enforce the law, and the Posse Comitatus Act restricts military involvement in domestic law enforcement.
