Imperial Russia
Pre-revolutionary Russian state
Imperial Russia refers to the Russian Empire from roughly 1721 (when Peter the Great took the title Emperor) until the 1917 revolution ended tsarist rule.
The term distinguishes this period from Soviet Russia and the modern Russian Federation: Imperial Russia was ruled by the Romanov dynasty for three centuries.
Under Imperial Russia, serfdom persisted until 1861.
